Q: Please introduce yourself: What is your name, where are you from, what do you do?
A: Hi, I’m Consiglio Manni, I grew up in Alliste, a small town near Lecce, south Italy. Now I live in Milan and work as a photographer.
Q: What is your relationship with photography, and how did you get into it?
A: My very first approach to photography was powered by the camera’s great appeal on me, as technological tool. I began to think of photography as a mighty medium by studying masters photographers such as Luigi Ghirri, Walker Evans and Robert Adams’s works.
Q: What do you think triggers you to photograph in a certain moment? Is it planned or solely driven by intuition?
A: I think it's always a mix between the two.
Q: Which city would you like to visit the most, and why?
A: North Dakota and Minnesota would be the first destinations I would like explore, especially in winter. Moreover, I’m a huge fan of Coen Brothers movies, I am really fascinated by the scenarios of Fargo movie
Q: What is your personal relationship to cities, and how do you perceive them as places in general?
A: Since I grew up in a very small town close to the sea, where often everyone knows each other. What I appreciated the most in cities is the ability of joining communities. It is a big pleasant paradigm shift. My personal relationship with the city is made by the encounter of people that share common interests.
Q: Regarding your project «36 hours in NYC»: What was your intention, and how did you come up with the idea?
A: Concerning my project «36 hours in NYC» during July 2022, I got the chance to visit NYC. My intention was to see and have the opportunity to photograph a city that has been idealized by me and other generations too through iconic movies. I focused my eyes and so my pictures on the city shapes, colors and details that are highly represented in the past photos and cinema.
Q: If it wasn’t for photography, what would you be interested in doing instead?
A: I believe I would have been a vintage car restorer!
Thank you, Consiglio!
